Crown continues its commitment to Destination Green initiative with Patt Reforestation Projects

LONDON, August 29, 2012 -- The Crown team has continued its mission of sustainability and reducing the company’s overall carbon footprint through several wide-reaching projects with the Plant a Tree Today Foundation (PATT), a UK-registered charity and Thai foundation dedicated to combating climate change and providing economic, social and environmental sustainability through community-based forestry projects in developing countries.

As part of Crown Worldwide Group’s ongoing Destination Green initiative, Crown United Kingdom and Ireland (UKI) donated more than £10,000 to PATT in 2011, with the objective of offsetting carbon dioxide (CO2) emission - the cause of global warming. The funds supported Thailand’s Khao Yai Forest Restoration Project, which was established in April 2010 to help restore the forest and biological habitants of this ecologically sensitive area. Khao Yai is home to a number of endangered plant and animal species of the world.

The project not only assists with conservation efforts in the region, such as providing increased habitat for wildlife and preventing erosion, but also reduces the impact of climate change globally through reforestation. Furthermore, the project benefits present and future generations of rural Thai community members as villagers earn money in exchange for planting, protecting and maintaining the trees. Through these recycling and environmental initiatives, Crown UKI aimed to remove 1,866 tons of CO2 emission put in the atmosphere in 2010.

In the past years, staff members from Crown’s Bangkok branch have visited the first restoration project site on behalf of Crown UKI to assist in various planting and gardening tasks. The two branches have been working in conjunction with one another to support Crown’s commitment to environmental sustainability. A recent PATT report shows that in total 5,354 trees were planted in 2011 as a result of this initiative, and the Bangkok staff is already eager to continue to show its support for this project once again. Leon Hulme, Crown Thailand general manager, and his Bangkok team are heading to Khao Yai in the upcoming week to continue their hands-on support for PATT.

This year, Crown plans to donate more than £5,000 to PATT to continue the funding of this project. It is estimated that approximately 1,450 tons of CO2 in total will be absorbed in 2012 through the planting of up to 2,500 new native Thai trees.

Crown UKI and PATT have been in partnership since 2008 and have planted more than 7,500 trees in Thailand in an attempt to reduce nearly 5,000 metric tons of carbon to date through the foundation’s efforts. Crown Worldwide speaks at UN

Thu, 09/06/2012 - 15:55

Jennifer Harvey, Crown’s Director of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) was invited to speak on behalf of the Crown Worldwide Group at the annual United Nations Junior Chamber International (JCI) Global Partnership Summit’s 'Creating Shared Value' session on Thursday, July 26th at the Sentry Centers Midtown East. Crown was the only corporation represented at the summit, full of speakers from non-profit and governmental organizations.

Harvey’s session focused on how for-profit corporations could successfully integrate social responsibility into the heart of their businesses. She described how Crown has built a formal CSR effort and the positive results of such effort. Participants were very interested in Crown’s progress over a relatively short period of time, particularly with its large global footprint of offices in almost 60 countries. During the session, Harvey spoke about aligning the CSR activities with business objectives, and the possibilities and benefits of the convergence of corporations and CSR, using Crown Worldwide Group as an example.

“CSR supports business goals,” said Harvey, summarizing what she found after surveying Crown’s senior managers. Evidence of this included lower staff turnover, better relationships between people who need to work together, and improved operational efficiencies from environmental investments, like solar panels and electric cars.

In particular, Harvey emphasized the significant benefits of employee engagement. “We give employees the chance to work with colleagues on issues beyond their daily job functions. This strengthens relationships while helping them to developing corporate skills. They learn to take initiative, innovate, practice leadership, and propose actions to management.”

Harvey concluded with recommendations on how audience members can influence their own companies to become more active meeting community needs. She recommended understanding corporate goals, then aligning them with a worthy cause. Championing the initiative internally and communicating expected benefits to management. After completion of an event, Harvey encouraged sharing the benefits of the participation, including boosts to community recognition, company morale, and senior management engagement. “These positive outcomes will fuel future CSR activities to the benefit of all.”

Only 10 percent of the audience members—mostly employees of for-profit companies—claimed participation in CSR activities at their workplace. From the success of Crown in this arena, the audience raised many questions on related topics, including acceptable levels of CSR demands on a company’s employees, best ways to communicate when seeking corporate sponsorship and support, and ethical implications when CSR activities are profitable. The questions came from members from all parts of the world, from Syria to Canada, to Nigeria and the USA.

The JCI Global Partnership Summit meets annually, bringing its members, partner organizations and corporations together to foster the purpose of this United Nations initiative and provide tools for members to support their involvement with community projects. The members of JCI are world citizens from over 50 countries, ranging in age from 18 to 40-years-old, who work for the betterment of the world and local communities.
