Taxis are plentiful in Hong Kong and they’re relatively easy to hail from the street (apart from during rush hour). Here are a few tips to help you to have a safe and enjoyable trip: There are three types of taxis distinguishable by their colors: red, blue and green which operate in different parts of Hong Kong. Red taxis operate throughout most of Hong Kong, blue taxis on Lantau Island and green taxis in the New Territories and all charge slightly different fares. As a result, don’t be surprised if a taxi driver requests you exit his cab and board another if you are destined for somewhere outside his jurisdiction. Many taxi drivers speak only a little English – showing an address written in Chinese or a map from your mobile will help you get to the right destination faster and without any miscommunication. The best place to catch a cab is at one of the many hotels or taxi stands around the city. Passengers cannot be picked up or dropped off in particular zones due to traffic flow and risks to pedestrians, so you may not receive door-to-door service if you’re getting on or off in one of these high traffic areas. Additional charges to fares include HKD 1-1.60 per journey as a tax. For crossings and tunnels, an additional charge of generally HKD 10-30 will be applied; however, for major tunnels and crossings fares may be higher. The cab driver will add any additional fees to the total cab fare at the end of your trip and if you have any questions, you can keep your receipt and call the local enquiry line for clarification: +852 2804 2600. Extra baggage also incur additional charges. Enjoy your ride!
